One of the most common profound tools in a Shaman’s repertoire is the shamanic journey—a powerful, visionary experience that allows individuals to enter into altered states of consciousness. This practice can also usually be learned and used by contemporary practitioners relatively easily.  But what exactly is a Shamanic journey, and why is it so important in Shamanic practice?


What is a Shamanic Journey?


A shamanic journey is a meditative or trance-like experience in which a person travels to the spirit world, often with the help of rhythmic drumming, rattling, or chanting. This altered state of consciousness helps the practitioner access realms beyond our ordinary reality. During a journey, the Shaman - or anyone who learns this practice - enters a non-ordinary reality, often described as the Lower, Middle, or Upper Worlds. Each of these realms is believed to hold different types of spiritual beings, animals, ancestors, and guides who can offer insight, healing, and knowledge.


Lower World: Often seen as the place of animal spirits and nature, where one can connect with the primal forces of life and the earth.

Upper World: Considered the home of enlightened beings, ancestors, and spiritual teachers.

Middle World: A realm similar to our own, but where the spirit of nature and places reside. It’s also where the spirits of the living can be accessed.


A Shamanic journey typically begins with the setting of an intention—whether it’s seeking answers to a question, finding healing for oneself or another, or connecting with a power animal or spirit guide. Guided by the steady beat of a drum or rattle, the practitioner closes their eyes, focuses inward, and allows their spirit to journey to the designated realm. Visions, symbols, and messages from the spirit world often come in vivid and powerful ways, providing deep insights or healing that can be integrated into daily life.
