Facilitated by:

Professor Ioan Fazey and Vanessa Garrity

This course is an invitation for you to widen your ways of knowing and open yourself to the sacred in a way that can inform how you can live and lead from deeper sense of what it means to care. It supports the growing number of professionals and leaders in health and care that sense we need new patterns of thinking, being and consciousness to meet our societal challenges related to health, our communities and the living world we depend on. This course opens new paths towards a more holistic way of working and leading that honours the whole person and our place within a living, conscious and interconnected world.

The course introduces ancient shamanic practices as a way of widening how you know, perceive and respond. You will learn the sacred practice of shamanic journeying - a structured way to enter a non-ordinary state of awareness - and how to develop a practical relationship with your own spirit teachers. Together, these give you access what Carl Jung called the collective unconscious for deep insight and guidance. The course is highly experiential, helping you shift your understanding of how change occurs and what it means to lead.

The course gives you with space to explore questions such as:

  • What would it mean to lead or practice from my whole self, including the spiritual?

  • What guidance is available to me beyond my own thinking?

  • How might I lead differently if I truly experienced myself as part of a living, conscious and interconnected world?

  • How does a capacity to transform myself shape capacities to transform the services and the systems I work within?

This is a professional development course certified for 20 CPD hours and taught by two very experienced facilitators.

Who is this course for?

The course is for registered health and care professionals interested in and/or who lead or influence others. This includes:

  • nurses, midwives, and doctors

  • psychologists and psychotherapists

  • occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals

  • pharmacists, paramedics and social workers

You might be a professional seeking an introduction course to shamanic approaches or lead a team, a service, a department or a programme of change. You may work in the NHS, independent practice, social care, the voluntary sector or a health organisation outside the UK. Participants are welcome from any country.

It is suited to those who:

  • recognise that leadership involves personal transformation as well as for organisations

  • are navigating complexity, transition or significant change

  • want to hone intuitive capabilities and develop more wholesome ways of knowing and being to support their work in challenging environments

  • are looking for new ways to understand and approach health, care, change and leadership

  • are open to engaging respectfully with shamanic and sacred traditions

No previous experience of shamanic practice is needed. What matters is curiosity, openness and a willingness to learn through experience and that you have an intuitive feeling that this course is right for you.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course you will be able to:

1.        Describe the foundations of core shamanic practice, including its origins and the respect owed to the traditions it comes from.

2.        Undertake shamanic journeying independently as a reflective practice for gaining insight into leadership questions.

3.        Establish and work in right relationship with personal spirit teachers as an ongoing source of reflection and guidance.

4.        Use introductory shamanic practices that support personal and collective wellbeing.

5.        Apply insights from these practices to a current leadership challenge or complex situation in your work.

6.        Reflect on how inner change relates to team culture, relationships and wider system transformation, and record this as part of your CPD.

What you will take away:

Enhanced inner resources. Practical tools that deepen with use, including shamanic journeying for insight and guidance when facing complex decisions.

Greater awareness of your leadership patterns. A clearer view of the assumptions and ways of being that shape how you lead and how others experience your leadership.

A different relationship with complexity and change. Ways of engaging with uncertainty that go beyond problem-solving alone, making room for intuition, creativity and fresh perspectives.

Connection with peers. Learning alongside other health and care leaders in a small group, with a shared commitment to more conscious and compassionate leadership.

A grounded foundation. Thorough grounding in authentic practices. The course is also a prerequisite for advanced training with shamanichealing.org.uk.

A 20 page handbook. A collation of the core insights developed in the programme and how to take your new found skills forward.

How the course works:

The course is highly experiential. The emphasis is on helping you develop new ways of knowing and perceiving and on exploring how this shapes your approach to professional practice and leadership.

The course runs online over four evening sessions of four hours each. Sessions are live and highly interactive on Zoom, combining teaching, guided practice, small-group work and reflective dialogue.

Between sessions you will complete practice-based homework, around 4 hours in total. This helps you build confidence in the practices and connect what you are learning to your own leadership.

Total CPD hours                                                                                      20

You will need a quiet, private space for each session, a stable internet connection, and a way to play audio (headphones are helpful).

As the training progressively builds your practice and the trust developed within the group.

CPD and certificate:

On completing the course you will receive a PDF certificate from shamanichealing.org.uk confirming 20 hours of continuing professional development: 16 hours of facilitated learning and 4 hours of practice-based homework.

The certificate is issued on attendance at all four sessions and completion of the homework. If you miss part of a session, please talk to us.

This course is self-certified by shamanichealing.org.uk. It is not accredited or endorsed by any professional or regulatory body. Most UK regulators, including the NMC, HCPC and GMC, ask professionals to choose CPD relevant to their practice and reflect on its impact. You may be able to include this course in your revalidation, CPD record or appraisal. Please check your own regulator’s requirements.

The reflective nature of the course, and the outcomes above, lend themselves well to writing a reflective account of how it has informed your leadership.

What this course is, and what it isn’t

This is a course in personal and leadership development. The practices you learn are for your own reflection, insight and wellbeing, and for how you lead.

It is not a clinical training. It does not qualify you to use shamanic methods with patients or service users, and it is not a substitute for evidence-based care. It sits alongside your professional practice rather than replacing any part of it.

Professor Ioan Fazey

Ioan is Professor of Social Dimensions of Environment and Change at the University of York, and an internationally recognised researcher on transformation and system change. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and worked on projects across five continents, facilitating, coaching and training leaders and organisations to work through complexity. Recent work has included supporting analysis of relational patterns in the way an Integrated Care Board has been functioning and working in depth with public health teams to support food system transformation.

His current interests are in how to support shifts towards more unitary forms of consciousness and in transcending our societal patterns that are based on separation. In this vein Ioan leads the Ecocentric Futures research group, including exploring how inner shifts in awareness support change in organisations and society. This group is founded on the premise that all research is sacred and inspires the opening up our ways of knowing and being.

Ioan is a certified shamanic practitioner and teacher, trained in the Embracing Shamanism tradition, and with more than 20 years’ experience in the healing arts. He holds a Certificate in Counselling Skills, Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education, and PhD in the role of experiential knowledge for working with complex phenomena. He founded shamanichealing.org.uk to bring his work as an academic, facilitator and practitioner together and support the kinds of consciousness shifts we need to navigate our rapidly transforming world.

Vanessa Garrity

Vanessa Garrity is a senior mental health nurse and healthcare leader with more than 30 years’ experience working across health and care systems. Having recently transitioned from senior NHS leadership, she is now Founder and Managing Director of Blue Atlas Group, providing ADHD assessments, post-diagnostic support, coaching and consultancy.

Her professional work is rooted in relational practice, compassion and social justice, with a particular interest in neurodiversity, women’s mental health, trauma-informed approaches and the relationship between personal wellbeing, organisational culture and leadership.

Alongside her healthcare career, Vanessa has developed a longstanding interest in spirituality, nature-based practices and the role of ritual in navigating change and transition. She is undertaking Druidic studies with the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD), training as a shamanic practitioner and developing her work as a sacred celebrant. These interconnected paths have deepened her appreciation of the importance of reconnecting with ourselves, with others and with the natural world, particularly during periods of uncertainty and change.

Vanessa is interested in how shamanic practices can create space for reflection, self-awareness and a deeper understanding of the patterns that shape how we lead. Drawing on her experience of senior leadership in complex healthcare systems, she brings an understanding of the pressures and emotional demands facing health and care professionals. She is particularly interested in how reconnecting with ourselves, our relationships and the wider living world might help us lead with greater compassion, authenticity and purpose.
